Have you experienced that performance improvement programs have fallen short of your expectations and that the cost of these programs didn’t live up to the returns, or even led to interruptions in running operations? Or have you seen that, despite costly compliance, projects you still fail to meet external regulation requirements? Well, lucky for you, SAP Process Mining provides a solution to overcome such ailments.

It is no secret that a lot of valuable information is hidden in large amounts of process data. Analysing this process data only makes sense if it also produces actionable insights, which you can use to your business’ advantage. Like searching for gold, you want to be able to find the richest soil where it is easiest to mine and reap the benefits. So, where is the gold that we are looking for?

In order to achieve this you need to: a) be able to evaluate the entire landscape, b) be able to distinguish noise from useful data, and c) be able to translate this data into actionable insights.

A) Evaluating the entire landscape:

Typically, a business process model is defined upfront and describes how the process should be executed. But unfortunately, in reality, many deviations of this standard occur. People consciously or unconsciously deviate from the predefined process. Many of the variants that individuals take are not even known to exist and, consequently, cannot be found on your management dashboards. And this is exactly where much is to be gained!

In traditional improvement initiatives, data sampling needs to take place to limit the scope to known areas of improvement, but often miss out on undiscovered areas (with sometimes even bigger improvement potential).

By using SAP Process Mining, all these process deviations can be discovered, as it makes it possible to consider all transactions for any given period where data is recorded.

B) Being able to distinguish noise from useful data:

One of the pitfalls in many big data initiatives is that with so many possibilities to study, it proves to be (too) time consuming to discover, find, and process the most relevant data. Proactive Insights, which uses Artificial and Machine learning, makes it possible to automate important parts of the analysis and focus your time, energy, and budget to where it matters.

C) Being able to translate this data into actionable insights:

This is about being able to take the initial insights, translate them to an actionable plan, implement, and monitor the results. And it is where a one-off analysis transforms into a structural and stable flow of operational improvements. With our test and learn approach we support our customers in achieving this position and (further) develop the skills of your analysts and data scientists.

For digital innovation to bring predictable value a concise articulation of the vision and transformation ambition is paramount.

Step 1: Together with the Design Thinking Center in Amsterdam, we bring Business and IT together for a deep exploration of stakeholders, channels, products, and processes to generate a rich set of insights and ideas. Instrumental to this is the step to precisely define the two-sided problems the ideas must solve.

Two-sided meaning that it should both solve something for your customers and, at the same time, improve the operations or increase efficiency. This results in an articulation of the customer value and business cases for why it is the right challenge to focus on.

Step 2: Define and articulate potential innovation solutions to address these challenges. Each initiative should be based on a minimal viable product supported by a business case and integrated fact-based benefit monitoring and restricted to an isolated area of the business.

Step 3: As you are discovering the path and produce measurable results, the solution can be scaled quickly. Instrumental in this stage are stakeholder management, benefits tracking, and promotion. Or when you encounter less than desirable or expected results the launch of new and alternate approaches. As you learn you can initiate new projects and scale them even faster since you are now familiar with the pitfalls and impediments.

Getting started

If you think this sounds promising, but maybe think that your IT or your staff is not ready for this, think again. In a matter of weeks, a first test and learn cycle can be completed.

If you think this sounds promising, but you want to see evidence supporting this, take a look at this video of Vodafone and how they applied SAP Process Mining (with SAP software partner Celonis).

The reassurance that we can deliver is illustrated by the fact that SAP named us Co-Innovation Partner of the year, and Celonis is the fastest growing tech company in Germany.
