Dura Vermeer’s garbage collection process as an example for smart business and SAP Leonardo? Oh yes! Read about the connected IoT garbage bin and bags as input for a higher waste separation, consumer awareness and basis for advanced analytics.

Dura Vermeer is a leading organization in construction, infrastructure and engineering. They’re aware of their influence on society through their projects and care about social responsibility. One example is their underground garbage transport system.

The concept of the product is that instead of placing garbage bags on the sidewalk of the street waiting for a dump truck to pick them up, bags are being dropped off into central garbage bins in the street and are being transported via underground tubes at 70km an hour to a central garbage collection point outside the city. Less garbage trucks, smell, noise and other inconveniences. Their solution is already being used in parts of Almere and Arnhem. This case was the basis and starting point for the smart garbage bin.

The Smart Garbage bin

My colleague Ton recently wrote a blog about Smart Business. It’s about finding the balance in operational excellence, innovation and powering businesses with disruptive new technology. SAP Leonardo is the direction for smart businesses and their digital transformation. But how do the Internet of Things, the cloud, advanced analytics and apps relate to the underground garbage collection process?

Following up on the underground garbage collection process, Dura Vermeer and local city governments wanted consumers to be more aware of the amount of garbage they collect, lower this amount and inform them about how well they perform at waste separation. This is where the concept of the smart garbage bin comes into play.

The idea is that consumers get special color coded bags and drop them off in a central smart bin in the street. The smart bin detects the person / household that does the drop off, it identifies the type of waste based on the color code, measures the weight, the amount of drop offs and so on. A solid foundation for Smart Garbage Analytics 😉

This way, data is is gathered about consumer waste collection and separation performance addressing the challenge of local governments to improve waste separation.

Innovation

Up to now, there is no data about garbage collection, waste separation or the performance of it. The contents of the bags were unidentified and no other information of them was collected. This left little to no basis for improved consumer awareness or garbage tracking.

With the smart garbage bin huge amounts of data are generated creating lots of possibilities. The first prototype leveraging the available data is a mobile app for consumers. The purpose of the app is to give consumers insight in their waste collection, separation and benchmark them against the average of other consumers from the same town. This way, the local governments and Dura Vermeer aim to improve awareness and waste separation.

Of course there is a lot of smart and innovative technology being used for this case. An IoT enabled smart bin connected to the SAP Cloud Platform for connectivity and data gathering, a mobile app for the users and advanced analytics to do the math. This way future waste collection can be predicted. This is input for the planning and optimization of recycling and logistics. Next to that, parts of towns can be benchmarked against each other. And that is just only the beginning.

But for now, the technology doesn’t matter. It’s about how you can get an idea of what smart business and SAP Leonardo can do for you in your context. I hope that the well known process of garbage collection in which we can all identify ourselves, has given you an example of what SAP Leonardo and the digital transformation can do for you.
